How do I pick trusted access?

Formal and informal account access

We have two types of account access we can set up, Formal and Informal.

Formal access is based on a legal document like a Power of Attorney or Court of Protection document. This allows a trusted third party full access to a Monzo customer’s account via the app. Depending on the access type, they’ll be able to make payments, set up direct debits and standing orders and manage cards. Check out Citizens Advice for more details about the options available. For more on formal access, check out our help article.

Informal access is an agreement between a Monzo customer, a trusted person and Monzo. Since it’s an informal agreement, it doesn’t affect any other financial arrangements. Informal access doesn't allow your chosen third party to make payments on your behalf but they can view and monitor your account via the app.

There is a range of access available within informal access as well. You can choose between basic and read only access. Here’s a breakdown of what a third party can and can’t do with these types of informal access:

You’re in control, even when you share access.
