Can I use my Monzo card abroad for free?
Are there limits on cash withdrawals abroad with Monzo?
Depending on how you use Monzo, you can make fee-free cash withdrawals up to a certain limit. Any fees you may have to pay are partly based on whether you're in the European Economic Area (EEA) or not. The EEA includes EU countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
If Monzo's your main bank account, you can make unlimited fee-free cash withdrawals abroad in the EEA, and up to £200 every 30 days for free outside the EEA. After that, we'll charge 3%.
Your 30-day allowance resets exactly 30 days after each withdrawal – not at the start of the month. For example, if you withdraw £150 on 2 March, that £150 will drop out of your allowance on 1 April. If you then withdraw £50 on 5 March, that £50 will drop out on 4 April. This means different withdrawals can reset on different days, depending on when you made them.
Your allowance is shared across all the accounts you hold with us. So if you have a joint account as well as a personal account, withdrawals from either account will count towards the same £200 limit (outside the EEA).
Just be aware that some ATMs may charge their own fee for taking out cash (we don't receive this), so it's always worth using a free machine when you can.
Do I need to tell Monzo when I’m going away?
No, you don’t need to let us know when you’re travelling. But if your card is lost or stolen abroad (or at home), you should freeze your card straight away in the app and reach out to our customer support team.
Does Monzo offer travel insurance?
If you upgrade to Monzo Max, you'll get worldwide travel insurance included. It covers things like trip cancellation (up to £5,000), medical bills (up to £10m), lost valuables (up to £750) and car hire excess (up to £3,000).
Family cover is also available for an extra £4 a month. It's provided by Zurich and powered by Qover. Ts&Cs apply. £50 excess.
Can I use Monzo Flex for holiday purchases?
Yes. Monzo Flex is our 0% credit card with fee-free spending abroad in any currency. You can flex at home or away with Section 75 Purchase Protection.
How do fee-free withdrawal limits work for Joint Accounts?
Cash withdrawal allowances are shared across all the accounts you hold with us.
That means if you have a personal account and a joint account, your fee-free withdrawal limit is spread across both. So any cash you take out from either account will count towards the same 30-day allowance.
For example, if you withdraw £100 from your personal account and £100 from your joint account within the same 30 days (outside the EEA), you'll have used your £200 fee-free allowance. After that, a 3% fee would apply until your allowance resets.
Your 30-day period resets exactly 30 days after each withdrawal, not at the start of the month.
What should I do if my Monzo card is lost or stolen while I’m travelling?
If your Monzo card is lost or stolen while you’re travelling, immediately freeze your card and contact our customer support team for help (you can do both in the Monzo app). You can also use our emergency logout feature on web to remotely log out of your other devices.
