Approving online payments

Online payments need to be authorised by 3D Secure.

3D Secure creates an extra layer of security for online payments, protecting you against fraud.

Here’s how it works:

When you make a payment, the merchant sends us several messages that trigger the notifications and approvals in your app. Once you've approved the payment, we send the merchant a message to let them know they can go ahead with the transaction.

At this point, we'd expect to get an authorisation request from the merchant, which is what charges your card for the amount you're trying to spend.

When we let the merchant know it really is you making the payment, we give them a code. When they send us their authorisation request, we need them to quote this code back to us, along with some other unique bits of information.
