Applying for a 16–17s account from an Under 16s account

Monzo for 16–17s has (almost) everything adults get. We’ve just blocked spending on things you can’t do if you’re under 18.

What do you need?

🆔 A valid, in-date photo ID – we accept passports, driving licences and national identity cards.

📱 Your own mobile number – we’ll send you a code as part of the application.

📩 Your email set up on your device – we'll send you an email as part of the application.

🌍 To be based in the United Kingdom – we can't open an account if you're abroad.

📆 You must be 16 or 17 years old

Then what?

  1. Tap the 3 dots on your Under 16s card then tap Level up Monzo

  2. Enter your email address

  3. Check your device for our email and tap the link inside to start

How do you apply?

It takes about 15 minutes:

  1. We’ll ask you some questions

  2. We’ll ask you to take a photo of your ID

  3. We’ll ask you to record a quick video

What happens next?

Once you’ve applied, we just need to check your details. It usually takes between 5 minutes and an hour, but can sometimes take up to 48 hours. We may ask for more information if we need it.

Using Under 16s while you wait

If you applied from Under 16s, you’ll be able use your Under 16s card as normal and see the Under 16s account in the Monzo app throughout the application process.

If you opted to apply independently, your Under 16s card will work, but you won’t be able to access Under 16s in the app to approve online payments or move money in your Pots to or from your card yourself.

If you need to do any of that while you a wait for your new 16-17s card, you should apply from Under 16s instead of independently.

If your application is successful

Card delivery can take 2 to 5 working days. When your new card arrives, you'll need to activate it. After that, your access to the Under 16s account will end.

Your parent or guardian can move any money in the Under 16s account across to your new account. They’ll just need to go to Payments and Pay someone in the app.

If you have any recurring payments on your Under 16s card, remember to set them up on your new card once it’s activated.
